    June 2015

The Novel Wave Energy Converter (NWEC) programme was Wave Energy Scotland’s second call, with the primary focus of characterising and developing the device prime mover and structure. The call opened in June 2015, with applications awarded for entry into Stage 1 for WECs which offered significant improvements over existing state-of-the-art technologies.

This package of documents covers the full set of requirements for Stage 1 of the 3-Stage programme which aims to develop novel WEC technologies.

Please note; entries into the NWEC Programme are closed. Projects that were originally accepted into Stage 1 have progressed into future stages of the programme through closed competitions.

NWEC - Stage 1 Competition Specification and Guidance outlines the competition, and provides guidance describing the requirements for a Stage 1 NWEC project, along with expected activities and outcomes that should be completed. General background on the economic challenges faced by the wave energy sector, target outcome metrics, suitable test facilities (as of June 2015) and device classifications is also provided.

NWEC - Stage 1 Tank Testing Guidance provides supplementary guidance to Stage 1 projects and offer further granularity on the wave tank testing elements. It should be read in conjunction with the main call documentation (Novel WEC – Stage 1 Competition Specification and Guidance Document).

NW11 – Standardised Sea States and Testing Requirements outlines the process and the conditions to be used for the standardised sea states during the WES mandatory performance tank testing during the NWEC Stage 1 Programme. The process and analysis of the results from these tests will help develop the WES recommended practice for tank testing of scale model WECs and the data analysis methods to be used. It will ensure a competitive appraisal of technology, as required by the Pre-Commercial Procurement process, and determine some of the criteria for stage gate progression to NWEC Stage 2.

NW11 - Third Party Verification (TPV) Guidance summarises information previously published in the NWEC call documentation related to details of the TPV of the design and implementation of the device tank testing, including scale model design, tank test setup and data analysis. This summary should not be used as a replacement for the complete set of requirements given in the ‘Novel WEC Competition – Guidance Document’ and ‘Novel WEC Competition – Tank Test Guidance’ documents.

Please note that this call is CLOSED. Requirements for future calls on a similar topic will differ from the documents available here.

Details of the projects which started in Stage 1 can be found here
